The Problem Statement
Air pollution in heavily populated cities throughout America has steadily increased since 2016, reversing a decades-long trend toward cleaner air. According to the UN Environment Programme and Smithsonian Magazine, air pollution is an overlooked problem affecting 90% of children and elders. This indicates that families with young children and elderly members living near these areas will start to see increased health concerns around asthma, respiratory infection, lung cancer, and many other ailments. Technologies exist on the market that can monitor and help filter the air, but they are expensive and under-utilized in the areas that need them the most. The burden on these families and the US healthcare system will continue to increase until an effective solution is found.
